Mim Shafer is excited to be starting her first year at YAC as Program Coordinator for GirlsEyeView Ware! In the past she has worked with similar programs that focus on social justice, art, and peace development, and is excited to be drawing on her experiences.
What inspires Mim about YAC is that YAC is true to its mission of youth empowerment. She feels that her students will be heard, respected and treated like full contributors to their program by all YAC affiliates – not just those enrolled in GEV. Artistically Mim is most inspired by the quilts of Gees Bend Alabama, the D’aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths and a myriad of photographers ranging from those professionally employed and students/colleagues of hers.
Before YAC, Mim coordinated the Photography Program at the Care Center in Holyoke for her last two years at Hampshire College. She’s been doing work as a radical doula/advocate for young families/sexual educator since 2008. She just completed a glorious summer job as a co-assistant director of a Quaker Farm Camp. She’s done menstrual health education, home healthcare visits and photography for an NGO in Rwanda. You might not expect that Mim can milk a cow! She gets energy and joy from her family of relatives and friends. If she could eat only one food for the rest of her life, it would be fennel or honey.
